Do you have fruit trees in your yard that need to be picked? Do you have extra produce? Don’t let your ripe and ready fruits go to waste!

Your answer is, “The gleaning program” which was launched in 2003 to help community members access and share surplus produce. Volunteer gleaners pick produce and share some with family, friends and neighbours. A significant amount of produce is donated to local agencies such as the food bank.

To date, the program has harvested more than 72,000 pounds of fruit, vegetable and nuts and 14 community agencies have received food.

If you would like to donate the fruits of your trees or if you can help out with the gleaning and picking contact Nanaimo Community Gardens and visit their programs tab where you will find more information on gleaning and how to register your fruit trees.

Do you have fruit trees in your yard that need picking and you have more than you need? Before that delicious fruit drops to the ground, call Nanaimo Community Gardens at 250-816-4769 and they have gleaners on standby waiting for the call! Gleaners will come with ladders and buckets and collect your apples and cherries and even your vegetables, all for free. You keep a third, some of the food collected goes to Nanaimo Foodshare to provide nutritional fresh food to those in need and the remainder goes to the pickers, in appreciation of their hard work.

If some of your fruit is overly ripe, this is good also as Nanaimo Community Gardens has a large juicer and can make juice or sauce or jams. See the blogroll for a link to their website.
