Cones are a treat for me! Red Breasted Nut Hatch in Parksville

Ralph had the timing just right to catch this Red Breasted Nuthatch in Parksville helping himself to a seed while going down the tree head first! Did you know that the nuthatches smear conifer sap around their nest holes to deter predators?

Ralph had amazing luck spotting this fast moving Myrtle Warbler while he was taking a rest on this Red Osier Dogwood in Linley Valley area of Nanaimo. Fantastic contrast!

I always wear my black cap! Wilson's Warbler in Parksville

Ralph was fast enough to catch up to this Wilson’s Warbler you can just see his black cap. This vibrant yellow bird is amazing. It is as if you were in a tropical jungle! Also, the warblers eat lots of bugs, a good friend for your garden.

Yes, I am a flashy lady! I am a Red-necked Phalarope

Ralph spotted this female Red-Necked Phalarope in the French Creek area, she is on her way to the northern tundra to breed. The females are larger and more brightly coloured and they pursue the males and it is the males who raise the young!

Have your seen a bird turn a stone? Black Turnstones visit Parksville

Ralph’s timing was just right as these Black Turnstones land on a large rock in Parksville. A very dramatic bird to see in flight, and interesting to watch as they look for food amongst the rocks and shells.

Photo Monday: Tourist in Qualicum

Look who flew in from Western Alaska! Black Brant

Making a mid flight call this Black Brant was spotted flying along the shores of Qualicum. Ralph identified that the leg band was placed on the bird at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, in Western Alaska. It was probably banded during the 1999 breeding season.

Make sure you keep your dogs off the beach during the Brant Season. Help them make it back to Alaska!
