Call for Actors at Village of Qualicum Theatre

New shows are planned for 2012 at the Village Theatre in Qualicum. The shows are put on by the Bard to Broadway Theatre Society.

The Bard to Broadway Theatre Society has selected 2 shows for their 13th season, “Hello Dolly” and “Becky’s New Car.” The shows will run from July 9th to August 18th, 2012.

Come and audition for these two shows. They need men and women from ages 15 to 70 roles includes both singing and non-singing. When auditioning bring your choice of material and for singing about 16 bars of a song.

Cast Requirements for Hello Dolly:
Dolly Levi: starring female strong voice and excellent comedic timing
Horace Vandergelder: leading male, gruff excellent comedic timing
Cornelius & Irene Molloy: both playing 33 years old strong singers, some dance
Barnaby & Minnie Fay: both playing about 17 years old, some dance comedic timing
Ermengarde & Ambrose: both playing 17-20, strong dance required
Ernestina: mature woman with good comedic timing
Chorus: some group dancing. Strong acting skills appreciated but not necessary
Waiters: male or female with very strong dance skills

Auditions are planned for the following dates:
Saturday, January 28th, St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 100 Chapel Street in Nanaimo 2- 5pm
Sunday January 29th at Shelly Road Centre, 186 Shelly Road in Parksville 2-5pm
Sunday February 5th at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 100 Chapel Street in Nanaimo 2-5pm
Sunday February 12th at Shelly Road in Parksville (Call-backs)

Woodstove Exchange Program for Mid Island

The Nanaimo Regional District’s Woodstove Exchange program is back! While incentives last, home owners can access a $250 rebate when replacing an old wood burning appliance with an EPA/CSA-certified wood burning, pellet, or gas stove or insert.

In order to qualify for the incentive, you must be replacing a wood burning appliance in a home in the City of Nanaimo, the City of Parksville, the Town of Qualicum Beach, the RDN Electoral Areas, or the District of Lantzville. The old appliance must not conform to the CSA B415.1 standards (typically an appliance built and installed before 1994). You must also be replacing your appliance no earlier than January 16th, 2012 to participate.

In addition to the rebates being offered by the Regional District of Nanaimo and member municipalities, many participating retailers are offering additional incentives towards the purchase of an eligible appliance.

Calling all film artists, the deadline to enter your short film is February 1, 2012.

It is year number 6 for The Vancouver Island Short Film Festival!

This film festival is extra special because it specifically features short filmmakers from Vancouver Island. The length of film is maximum 12 minutes including credits.

The Vancouver Island Short Film Festival creates opportunities for local filmmakers to screen their films, network with other film professionals and inspire.

Where is the final pasture for Island horses?

Retired horses, if they are lucky, spend their last days at the Rest and Recuperate Equine Care Society in Errington.

Since 1995 the Rest and Recuperate Equine Care Society has been providing care for elderly horses. Unfortunately, funding like so many charities has hit an all time low. They are in immediate need of funding for food and medicine.

Would like you to help the horses? You can donate your Quality Food (Q Points) to the society, which is listed under Equine Care Society at the Parksville or Qualicum store locations. You can also donate through any bank (see their website).

Sandra Billy is hoping you have a passion for horses and would you like to make a difference in a horse’s last days.

Nanaimo Transit Open House

On Tuesday, December 6, 2011 the Regional District of Nanaimo Transit System and BC Transit are hosting an open house from 12 pm to 8 pm at Beban Park to explain the specifics of this expansion to current and future riders.

“This significant increase in transit service will mostly be noticeable to City of Nanaimo transit users, but there will also be improvements for residents of the Bowser area, and for commuters who travel to Nanaimo from the Oceanside area.”

The expanded transit service will include more frequent trips to commercial areas and major hubs including Departure Bay Ferry Terminal, Vancouver Island University and Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, and will increase convenience for residents who use the system for day-to-day commuting.

Will this mean increased transit fares? Come to Beban Park and find out.

Drinking water meeting in Parksville

Did you know your drinking water comes from Englishman River?

There will be a meeting open to the public on Englishman River Water Service Management, Wednesday, November 9, 2011, 6pm at the Parksville City Hall room 129.

In 1996, The Regional District of Nanaimo, the City of Parksville and the Town of Qualicum Beach entered into a joint venture agreement to construct, operate and maintain the Arrowsmith Dam and associated water facilities. They formed the Arrowsmith Water Service (AWS) and received licence No. 110050 from the provincial government to extract water from the Englishman River.

The water licence requires AWS to release water from the reservoir between (approximately) June 1st and October 31st. Over the summer and fall, the reservoir is drained to support river flows for domestic water extraction and fishery resources and is typically, by design, empty by the end of October.

The requirements for release of water may be amended through the Provisional Operation Rule (POR) attached to the licence.

Concerts at the Old School House

The Old School House in Qualicum Beach is featuring music every Sunday starting September 18th. Every concert will be two hours, from 2:30 to 4:30pm. Tickets are $13 for members and $16 for non-members.

Sept 18th: The Lafayette String Quartet with Brazilian Pianist Flavio Varani: The University of Victoria’s renowned resident string quartet teams up with one of the world’s greatest concert pianists for an unforgettable afternoon of music.

Sept 25th: Pianist Paolo Vairo: internationally esteemed virtuoso from Italy who now resides in Pennsylvania. A return engagement, by popular demand!

Oct 2nd: Pianist Reiko Shimokawa and Flutist Chieko Konishi-Louie: A Tokyo/Vancouver collaboration with flute/piano music in the first half and solo piano selections in the second half.

Oct 16th: The Laura Crema Trio: From Vancouver, vocalist extraordinaire Laura Crema, with Ron Hadley on piano and Rick Kilburn on bass, blends jazz with popular music and improvisation.

Oct 30th: Clarinetist Bill Smith: With a career spanning 70 years, Bill Smith is one of the world’s most respected artists and composers in the history of jazz clarinet. Joining him is Ron Hadley-piano, Rick Kilburn-bass and Dan Brubeck-drums.

Nov 6th: Flutist Christie Reside and Pianist Terence Dawson: The Principal Flute of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the internationally accomplished UBC Piano Faculty member present a communicative and colourful programme of French music that will include works by Debussy, Faure, and Roussel.

Nov 16th: Pianist Bruce Vogt: A special recital celebrating the bicentenary of Franz Liszt. Mr.Vogt is a highly esteemed concert pianist as a leading interpreter of and authority on Liszt’s music. Free lecture at 1:30 PM for ticket holders.

Dec 4th: Pianist Arthur Rowe: Internationally acclaimed University of Victoria Piano Faculty member performs works by Mozart, Schubert and Granados.

Dec 11th: Amy Newman and the Christmas Revelers: The “Revelers” perform seasonal favourites old and new in beautiful four-part harmony, dressed in Victorian costumes. The quartet is directed by Amy Lee Newman, who is well-known for her acting, singing and producing of authentic historical entertainment at Theatre Royal in Barkerville Historic Town, BC’s premier gold rush site.
