Grant Keddie, of the Royal BC Museum, discovered the 17,000 year old tusk on Island View beach in Central Saanich this past week. Mammoths were believed to have roamed this area around that time; it is believed they came to the islands by crossing large flood plains that filled the Gulf of Georgia during parts of the Olympia interglacial period between 29,000 and 20,000 years ago.
