Water Awareness Campaign – Parksville

Time to earn your stars! The City of Parksville has a water awareness campaign called “Aquastar Water Awareness Program.”

Where does your water come from?

Although BC is one of the wettest provinces in Canada, we still waste too much water and are not saving enough for the dry summer months. Over the last few years, areas have been affected by a lack of precipitation due to changing weather patterns.

If you need help in lowering your water consumption, email aquastar(at)parksvilleaquastar.ca or contact AquaStar Water Awareness Program at the City of Parksville.

Wastewater Treatment Plant open house – Oct 24

What happens after you flush? Where does it go?  Curious? Find out at The Greater Nanaimo Pollution Control Centre’s open house on October 24. This chemically-enhanced primary treatment plant treats wastewater from residential and commercial users in Nanaimo and Lantzville.

You will find out about the latest plant upgrades and environmental initiatives, and learn how wastewater treatment works and how to prevent wastewater pollution. There will also be an opportunity to learn about the Regional District of Nanaimo’s Liquid Waste Management Plan, currently under review. The open house runs from 10am to 2pm, with tours of the plant available every hour, on the hour.

Vancouver Island University is participating in the event to educate the public about biosolids and their use in the VIU forest fertilization program. The Regional District of Nanaimo will also highlight its Team WaterSmart and SepticSmart programs.

The Greater Nanaimo Pollution Control Centre is located at 4600 Hammond Bay Road (the entrance is off McGuffie Road). Kids can participate too – an activity sheet and prizes for children are part of the event.
